Qira’at Course

Explore the beauty and depth of the Ten Qira’at—canonical modes of Qur’anic recitation—through a structured course focused on accurate transmission, unique recitation features, and scholarly authenticity.

2. Description

This advanced course provides an in-depth study of the Ten Qira’at (recognized modes of Qur’anic recitation), with a focus on their authentic chains of narration, distinctive phonetic characteristics, and specialized recitation rules. Students will gain insight into both the historical development and linguistic intricacies of each Qira’ah. Through structured lessons and guided recitation, participants will be able to recognize the variations and confidently apply the correct recitation styles, such as Hafs, Warsh, Qalun, and others. This course is ideal for advanced learners who wish to elevate their mastery of the Qur’an’s rich oral tradition.

3. Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will:

  • Recognize and apply key differences between Qira’at in pronunciation, elongation (madd), stopping (waqf), and articulation

  • Understand the historical significance, narrators, and transmission chains of each Qira’ah

  • Accurately recite selected portions of the Qur’an in various Qira’at

  • Develop mastery in at least one Qira’ah, with the option to advance to others

  • Build a theoretical and practical foundation to pursue Ijaazah in multiple Qira’at

4. Requirements

To enroll in this course, students are expected to have:

  • An Ijaazah in Hafs (Preferred) or equivalent mastery in one Qira’ah

  • Strong proficiency in Tajweed and Qur’anic recitation

  • A commitment to advanced recitation accuracy and memorization techniques

5. Course Duration

This is an open-ended course, allowing students to proceed at a pace suitable to their level and focus. The duration may vary depending on the number of Qira’at studied and the student’s consistency and accuracy in applying the differences across recitations.

6. Assessment & Certification

Upon completing the full Khatma for each Qira’ah studied, students will undergo a rigorous assessment with their Sheikh. If the student meets all recitation and accuracy criteria, they will receive an official Sanad (chain of narration) for that Qira’ah, certified and sealed by the institution. This grants the student the authority to teach that specific Qira’ah to others.

7. Outcome

Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

  • Accurately recite the Qur’an using multiple canonical Qira’at

  • Identify the differences in pronunciation, grammar, and Tajweed rules across Qira’at
